How Blooio Pivoted From an iMessage API to an Apple Messaging Service Provider

Blooio started as an API for sending iMessages without Apple hardware. Then the team realized businesses didn't need blue bubbles — they needed verified conversations. Here's how the pivot happened.

Blue bubbles were never the point

On Product Hunt, Blooio founder David Harvey opened his launch comment with a candid recap. "Back then, we were building an API that let developers send and receive iMessages without needing physical Apple hardware," he wrote. That was the original product: a developer tool that abstracted away Apple's hardware so anyone could send and receive iMessages from code.

It worked, but it taught the team something. "We realized that businesses didn't just need a way to send blue bubbles," Harvey continued. "They needed a way to have actual, verified conversations with their customers inside Apple's Messages app." A programmable pipe for iMessage was a hacker's product. A verified, branded channel where customers get answers, take action, and keep moving without jumping between apps was a business product.

So Blooio changed shape. On October 1, 2026, the company announced its launch as a Messaging Service Provider for Apple Messages for Business. The pitch flipped from "send iMessages from anywhere with an API" to "business messaging, built for iPhones" — a platform where brands offer guided, conversational experiences from the first hello to a completed order and payment, all inside the Messages app customers already use.

Verified conversations, not text threads

At the heart of Blooio is a simple observation: the highest-intent moments in a customer journey already happen in messaging. A shopper asks a question, a patient needs to book, a support case needs a human — and today that conversation usually dies in a web form or a chat widget that forgets everything when the tab closes.

Blooio turns those touchpoints into Apple Messages for Business conversations with the brand. A website visitor gets a direct path into Messages instead of a contact form. An app user moves into a persistent thread without starting over. Someone who finds the business in search taps Message Suggest and lands in a branded conversation. A help-center visitor moves a support request into Messages and can pick it back up days later where they left off.

The "verified" part matters as much as the convenience. Businesses register their brand profile in the Apple Business Register, so customers see a verified brand identity — not a random phone number. Onboarding follows three steps: register the brand for verification, connect the CRM, backend, API, or workflows and test the experience, then pass Apple's formal Experience Review before the journey goes live. Blooio shepherds brands through the whole process.

Feature parity with the channel

What separates Blooio from a generic SMS gateway is that it supports the channel at feature parity, so brands can build complete conversations rather than plain back-and-forth text. The supported capabilities read like a toolkit for commerce: Business Invitations that pull customers into a branded thread, List Pickers and Time Pickers for choosing from menus or booking a slot, Quick Replies for one-tap responses that keep things moving, Forms and Authentication to securely collect details and sign customers in, file attachments and rich links — and Apple Pay to complete an eligible purchase or payment without ever leaving the conversation.

The platform pitch is that customers move from intent to action inside one thread: choosing an option, submitting details, authenticating, paying, receiving documents, and getting support. The company's launch announcement framed it as giving brands everything needed to go live — the messaging platform, AI agent integrations, streamlined brand approvals, the API, interactive experiences, and connections to the systems brands already use.

Blooio is not Apple-only, either. The same platform sends and receives RCS for Business, WhatsApp for Business, and SMS, and a business drives it all from a CRM, an automation, the API, or an AI agent. The person on the other end just gets a normal message.

An API built for developers and AI agents

Developers were Blooio's first users, and the API remains the core of the product. In January 2026 the company shipped API v2, a major release that modernized the whole developer surface: full group chat management (create iMessage groups, rename conversations, set custom group icons, manage participants programmatically), native tapback reactions, HMAC-SHA256 signed webhooks, and a fully RESTful architecture with an OpenAPI specification.

The release addressed what the company called growing demand from businesses and developers integrating Apple's iMessage protocol into customer communication workflows, AI agents, and automation platforms. Real-time webhooks fire for group events like name changes and icon updates so applications stay synchronized with conversation state. "Group messaging has been our most requested feature," David Harvey said in the announcement. "Businesses can now coordinate with teams, manage multi-party customer conversations, and build collaborative experiences. All through a simple API."

Distribution leans developer-native too: maintained first-party integrations with GoHighLevel, n8n, and Make.com, plus an MCP server so AI agents can plug directly into messaging. The platform commits to 99.9% uptime with auto rate limits, and the site's docs show the typical shape of usage — check a contact's channel capabilities, then POST a message to the right channel endpoint.

Pricing that scales with volume

Blooio's pricing page leads with a tagline that says it all: "Blue Messages for your CRM." Teams can start sending instantly on a free tier, and paid plans scale by volume and infrastructure needs. Starter, aimed at personal use, runs $39 per month with 5 new conversations that can be started per day. Commercial Shared, for small teams, is $89 per month with 15 per day. Commercial Dedicated, for growing businesses, is $289 per month with unlimited conversation starts — and dedicated plans isolate numbers to the customer's workspace while shared plans use managed shared pools.

There is also an Inbound plan at $98 per month for reply-only numbers that cannot start new conversations, and custom Enterprise workspaces for larger scale. A custom area code costs a $75 one-time fee per number. Across every plan, team members are unlimited and message history is retained forever, with no per-message billing cap.

Behind the product are three founders listed on the company's About page: David Harvey as CTO, who "shapes the bridges between customer systems and Blooio"; Eric Parsons as CAIO, who defines the company's AI development and product; and Aria Afshar as CEO, who runs day-to-day operations and growth. The About page carries a letter from Eric about the people building the company, and the founders can be found at @blooio_messages on X. Blooio is based in Casper, Wyoming, and lists memberships in NVIDIA Inception, Claude Startups, Cloudflare for Startups, AWS Activate, and the Google for Startups Cloud Program — startup-program credibility stacked behind a channel that lives or dies on trust.

The playbook

  1. Pivot from tool to channel when the insight changes — Blooio's original product was an API that let developers send and receive iMessages without physical Apple hardware. Founder David Harvey says the team realized businesses didn't just need blue bubbles — they needed actual verified conversations inside Apple's Messages app. So they rebuilt around Apple's official channel and became a Messaging Service Provider.
  2. Match the channel's native power, don't water it down — Blooio supports Apple Messages for Business at feature parity: Business Invitations, List Pickers and Time Pickers, Quick Replies, Forms and Authentication, file attachments, and Apple Pay checkout inside the conversation. Brands never have to downgrade a customer journey to plain text.
  3. Let developers, automations, and AI agents all in — A REST API with an OpenAPI spec, HMAC-SHA256 signed webhooks, native integrations with GoHighLevel, n8n, and Make.com, plus an MCP server so AI agents can plug straight into messaging. Developers, automations, and agents all get a first-class door in.
  4. Price by volume, keep onboarding frictionless — A free tier to start sending instantly, then volume-tiered plans from $39/mo Starter to $289/mo Commercial Dedicated, with shared versus dedicated number isolation, message history retained forever, and unlimited team members on every plan.
  5. Borrow trust from the platform and the ecosystem — Going live means registering the brand in the Apple Business Register, connecting and testing the CRM/API workflows, and passing Apple's formal Experience Review. Blooio walks brands through the process — and lists memberships in NVIDIA Inception, Claude Startups, Cloudflare for Startups, AWS Activate, and the Google for Startups Cloud Program as credibility signals.
