What Lookout (for Slack) is about

What makes it different

Lookout is a Slack app for the messages you can't afford to miss. You describe — in plain words — what counts as urgent, pick the channels to watch, and Lookout reads incoming messages against your description. When one matches, it takes the action you chose instantly, so a customer escalation in #support or an outage mention in #alerts doesn't sit unread while you are in a meeting.

Setup takes minutes and stays in language, not rules. You type something like "urgent customer issues" and Lookout shows you how it would have performed on your channels' recent messages before anything goes live — you can tune the description until the matches look right. Behind the scenes the classification is powered by Jev, an AI that reads each message and answers yes or no against your Lookouts. One practical caveat straight from the fine print: Slack lets Lookout read message history about once a minute, and the AI can miss a message or match one it shouldn't, so it is a safety net, not a replacement for on-call.

The actions are what make it more than a smart alert. On a match Lookout can add an emoji reaction you pick, DM you with the matched message, open a Linear issue, create a Notion page, send an email, log to incident.io, or fire a POST webhook with the message, its channel and a link. You can pause or delete any Lookout at any time from the app or its Slack Home tab, and removing it from a channel or uninstalling it from the workspace stops it reading messages.

On privacy, the story is unusually plain-spoken: message text is sent to Jev (operated by TypeSafe) to check each message under TypeSafe's terms, and Lookout clears it after processing and retries. The company says it never trains AI models on your messages, Slack tokens are encrypted at rest, and visible app content may appear in session recordings retained for 30 days. If a Lookout acts and pushes content to a destination you connected — a Notion page, an email, a webhook — that content goes where you told it to, under that service's terms.

Lookout's Product Hunt maker is Matthew Busel, the co-founder of no-code data sync tool Whalesync, who launched Lookout in mid-October 2026. Pricing is simple for now: it is free during beta — the app runs on a quota of free actions — and the company says paid plans are coming soon.
